BBC HD quality campaign to meet BBC
A delegation of viewers unhappy about the picture and sound quality on BBC HD will today meet with representatives from the corporation. The group will sit down with BBC HD controller Danielle Nagler and BBC principal technologist Andy Quested at Television Centre in West London to discuss the “current poor picture quality level of the corporation’s flagship high definition television service”. They will argue that BBC HD is failing in its obligation to “deliver a very high quality technical service to viewers, by adhering to, or seeking to exceed, industry standards for picture resolution”. After the BBC introduced new encoders on August 5, the bitrate on BBC HD dropped from 16Mbs to 9.7Mbs, a reduction of nearly 40%. Satellite viewers subsequently reported various problems with picture quality and sound on the channel, with some accusing the BBC of failing to deliver a truly HD service. Sky Player coming to Humax Freeview boxes
Sky has agreed a deal with Humax to bring its Sky Player web-TV service to the firm’s new range of IP-enabled Freeview HD set top boxes. Under the agreement, Sky Player will launch “soon” on a range of Humax receivers, including the Humax HD-FOX T2 and the firm’s forthcoming Freeview HD DVR. Sky’s IPTV service offers access to a selection of live TV channels, including Sky Sports 1 and Sky 1, along with a library of video-on-demand content. As with Sky Player on other platforms, existing Sky TV customers will be able to access the service on Humax boxes dependent on their core Sky product subscriptions.
