Freeview PVR

Freeview PVR (Personal Video Recorder) is a way to allow you to receive Digital TV on your analogue TV. You receive free digital TV channels, plus radio and interactive services, through your aerial with no contract and just a one off payment for equipment. If you have a Freeview PVR with a twin tuner, you can record one digital channel and watch another and with some record two digital channels whilst watching a third. All Freeview PVRs have an in-built Freeview programme guide called EPG (Electronic Programme Guide), and you can just browse it and select things to record. Sky Sports News: Leaving Freeview soon

For 8 years Freeview viewers have been able to keep up to date with all the goings on in the world of sport by watching Sky Sports News. But that is all set to end as Sky has announced that it will be taking the channel off of the Freeview line-up and replacing it with Sky 3+1. So it’s bye bye to the gorgeous Georgie Thompson, and hello to Zoo Vet At Large. Oh dear. The move comes because Sky is planning to incorporate Sky Sports News into its sports subscription packages, thus providing more funds for the channel. Reports suggest a new improved studio and better outside broadcasts, and there’s also an impeding HD launch. “As part of a subscription service, customers can look forward to expanded coverage and the launch of Europe’s first HD sports news service”, said the Sky Sports managing director, Barney Francis. Sure, Sky Sports … Continue reading

How To Update Humax 9150T PVR Using OTA Update

I’ve just updated my Humax 9150T PVR and it seems to have worked like a charm. Initially, I got an error message, E-OS, but again searching the trusted internet, I found out that I had to reset to default setting first. Over The Air (OTA) software update is done automatically overnight on the night when the update is being broadcast as long as your PVR is on standby and neither on nor off. Sometimes this doesn’t work so you have to do it manually. If you don’t know how to do this, here is the sequence. It’s probably similar for the other Humax PVRs that need updating. Go to MENU => Installation (default password is 0000) Then Installation => DEFAULT SETTING Once the the system is reset to its default setting, again  go to MENU => Installation and then => SOFTWARE UPDATE A box will pop up to say that … Continue reading

Fix for Humax PVRs Freezing Up and other problems

My Humax PVR has been playing up recently. It has been freezing up during recording, missing recording and being unresponsive to the remote. I was looking for a solution and found out that others are having the same problem – I found the solution here. Humax have responded to this problem by releasing an update for this problem. They say: The increasing complexity of the UK’s broadcast infrastructure and requirement to process a substantially higher volume of information has put the PVRs under pressure and significant performance issues became particularly apparent through the digital switchover. We recognise this has regrettably caused frustration and problems for some of our PVR-9300T and PVR-9150T users, and in particular those with the older PVR-9200T models. You can get the schedule for the updates of all the models concerned over the air here. The next one for the Humax 9150T is from tomorrow 10am upto … Continue reading

Analysts doubt Ofcom’s price cut impact

Analysts have claimed that Virgin Media and BT are “unlikely” to be offering cheap Sky Sports 1 and 2 from next season, despite Ofcom’s new pricing model. Yesterday, the media regulator ordered Sky to reduce the wholesale price of each sports channel by 23.4% for rival operators. Ofcom claimed that the new system is effective immediately, meaning Virgin Media, BT Vision and Top Up TV would be able to offer the channels at reduced prices in time for the 2010/11 Premier League season. However, analysts at Citi believe that the situation is “unlikely” to come to fruition as Sky has already signalled its intention to launch a legal challenge against the ruling. “Sky will appeal to the Competition Appeal Tribunal and will also ask for a ‘stay’ to delay implementation of the new pricing,” said the firm in a note to clients. “Even if a ‘stay’ is not achieved we … Continue reading

Britons ‘watch 30 hours of TV a week’

People in Britain watched 30 hours, 4 minutes of linear television per week in the first quarter of 2010, up 2 hours, 29 minutes year-on-year, new research has revealed. According to data compiled by Thinkbox for the three months to the end of March, linear television viewing has increased across every age group. Using official figures from the Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board (BARB), the firm found that Britons watched television for 4 hours, 18 minutes a day over the quarter, an increase of nearly 8% year-on-year. Thinkbox also discovered that people watched 48 adverts a day on commercial television during the three months, up 4.9% year-on-year. A variety of factors helped fuel the growth, including BARB’s recently introduced new audience measurement system, which is believed to deliver a 4% year-on-year uplift to TV viewing figures. Thinkbox found that 78% of people watched on-demand television to catch-up on missed programmes, which … Continue reading
